How much did our Family trip to Germany and Austria Cost?

The following will be an accounting of our 2025 trip to Austria and Germany. If you’ve not read the blog, you can do so here. Or if you want a small wrap up, you can check The Sisters here. Or mine here. It can provide some context to the costs below! All prices will be in Canadian (or converted into Canadian when it shows up on my CC bill). And they’ll be broken down to a per person cost as best I can. Because this is a family trip there is an element of cost sharing so some of these expenses may not be exact.

The Costs

All in all this whole trip cost (me individually) $4008.80 with a per day cost of $286.34 over 14 days. And it breaks down as follows:

Transportation    $1561.96 (+75, 00 Points)
Accommodations + $1536.67
Food & Beverage + $773.76
Miscellaneous + $136.41
Total = $4008.80

In total, the transportation costs for this trip total $1561.96with a point redemption. Transportation can be broken down into two main sections: Airfare and Ground Transportation which costs $1174.28 + points and $387.68 respectively.

The Flights ($1174.28 + 75000 Points)

In total my airfare cost $1174.28 and 75000Aeroplan points. For the Airfare the following are all my flights taken on this trip:

Getting around on the Ground ($387.68)

My ground transportation cost is $387.68. Most of the ground transport are trains between cities and transit costs within the cities. The following are all my ground transportation costs for the trip:

  • Amtrak (Vancouver-Seattle) ($68.10)
  • Orca Transportation (Seattle Transit) ($4.17)
  • Deutsche Bahn Train Belin – Munich ($116.35)
  • Deutsche Bahn Train Munich- Frankfurt ($80.76)

  • Vienna Transit ($25.02)
  • Berlin Transit ($20.63)
  • Munich Transit ($27.64)
  • Frankfurt Transit ($5.58)

The Accommodations: ($1536.67)

Our accommodations this time are pretty straight forward. The Parental Minions shared a room and The Sister and I also shared a room. We did use one Marriott Free Night Certificate to treat the Parental Minions for their one night at the Westin Grand Berlin. I didn’t include that into the cost breakdown. All of our accommodation costs in total come out to $1536.67.  In general the costs are a little higher than other trips since Europe is slightly pricier and we chose more comfortable hotels for the family.

Food and Beverage ($773.76)

Tracking food spending is a little difficult especially when travelling with family. Because there’s a lot of cost sharing, it isn’t always easy to keep track of the expenditures. Most of the total is from credit card statements and paper receipts, the rest is an estimate. The Sister and I also treated the Parents to an anniversary meal so those costs will be shared between her and I and also increases our per person cost. I suggest taking this total with a grain of salt! In total my trackable expenses for meals and snacks throughout my trip amounted to $773.76.

Miscellaneous Expenses ($136.41)

There aren’t too many miscellaneous expenses this time around. It’s primarily activity entry fees and also includes data connectivity for Europe. In total these expenses add up to $136.41.  The following are most of the trackable activity and miscellaneous expenses:

Totals

After adding everything up, we get a grand total of $4008.80. Averaging this out over 14 days, we get an average cost of $286.34 per day. If you’re still reading, I hope this post is helpful or interesting! I continually track my costs to see where I can try to bring my overall expenses down while enhancing the experiences where I can! This one is a bit of an exception because not only are we travelling with family, we’re celebrating our parents anniversary. So having the cost creep up a little is to be expected.
