Minion Monies: How much did my 2022 Maui Trip Cost?

The following will be an accounting of the Maui Trip I took with several friends in March and April of 2022. If you’ve not read the blog, you can do so here. Or if you want a summary of the entire trip you can check that out here. It might provide some extra context to the costs below!

The Transportation ($1279.12 & 6 eUpgrade Credits)

The Flights ($401.11 & 6 eUpgrade Credits)

Booking a round trip flight would have been ideal, but with the way some of the options and prices worked out, I ended up separating the inbound and outbound flights.

For Flying from Vancouver to Maui, I purchased a one way Air Canada Flex fare for $270.24. While there is a cheaper fare option available, I did this because I wanted to leverage my frequent flyer status and the eUpgrade credits that comes with it. This would allow me to upgrade my flight into Business Class for 6 eUpgrade credits and no additional cost.

While it’s not the cheapest option, it does provide me with a fair amount of value and (obviously) a more comfortable ride to Hawaii. Ultimately, if I were to pay for this flight out right it would have cost me $2087 so with all things being equal, I was comfortable with paying the slight premium (about $80) to be able to upgrade.

Ideally, I would have done a similar thing for the way home. But the flex fare price on the return leg wasn’t as feasible and the next best flight would see me fly into Calgary for a layover before flying home. In both cases, the direct Westjet price was too hard to beat, so I ended up going with that. This flight cost $130.87 in total.

The Car ($766.63)

Because the idea of travel was returning, car rentals in Hawaii seemed to be pretty pricey! So, for our vehicle needs we made use of a “newer” service called Turo. This is a little bit like AirBnB but for cars. So instead of going with a traditional car rental company, Turo puts car owners in touch with car “borrowers”. After a bit of browsing we ended up renting a small SUV which cost us  $599USD. After conversion this worked out to be $766.63 Canadian.

Gas ($111.38)

One additional cost to driving around Maui is refueling the car. We did this twice cost $111.38 CAD (Converted).

Total Transportation Costs

Airfare    $401.11 6 eUpgrade Credits
Car Rental + $766.63
Gas + $111.38
Total = $1279.12

Accommodations ($2867.86)

Since we didn’t move around much in Maui, we ended up staying in one place for the entirety of the trip. For the four of us we rented a two bedroom airBnB near Lahaina which suited us very well!

In general, Maui accommodations are fairly pricey. Finding one that could fit us was bit difficult and this airBnB set us back $2867.86 for five nights.

Total Accommodation Costs

Maui    $2867.86
Total = $2867.86

Food and Beverage ($1032)

While we did have cooking facilities in our AirBnB, we didn’t actually make use of them at all during our trip. This means that we did eat out for a majority of meals. Though we also picked up a few groceries to tide us over throughout the trip. This cost us around $90.

It’s a bit hard to total the entire food cost because there were just as many times we shared food as we had individual meals. We also took turns to cover the costs so trying to total everything up is a bit more difficult.

As an estimate, most of the things I paid for individually totaled approximately $322. As a group the bills came out to around $620.

Miscellaneous Expenses ($487.36)

For miscellaneous expenses, we incurred a few. The biggest would be the surfing lessons which totaled $430.03 (After currency conversion and gratuity) for the four of us.

We also paid for the Road to Hana audio guide which cost $12.83 and entry into Wai’anapanapa State Park which cost $38.42.

As the pandemic is still going on, one other requirement for travel is to have a negative COVID test in order to enter America. This came in the form of a Switch Antigen test which cost $89 each. It comes with two tests, and I only used one, so effectively it costs $44.50

Totals

If you add everything up:

Transportation    $1279.12 6 eUpgrades
Accommodations + $2867.86
Food & Beverage + $1032
Miscellaneous + $487.36
Total = $5666.34

We get a grand total trip cost of $5666.34.

This total is slightly misleading because some of these costs are totals for the group and some are individual. So after doing a little math, my individual cost for this trip came out to around: $2001.92 and 6 eUpgrades.

If I were to average this out over 6 days it comes out to roughly $333.65 per day. As opposed to past trips, its clear Maui is a bit more expensive than other trips, but that probably comes with the tropical island destination.
