Flying to Bangkok

Today we fly to Bangkok. So after checking out, we arrange for a driver to take us to the airport 30 minutes away. Checking into our flight is pretty straight forward, and before we know it we are waiting in the terminal. Soon after our boarding is called and we head onto the tarmac to board our plane.

The flight is a short hour hop to Bangkok and pretty uneventful. From the airport we take the Airport rail link into the city and find our way to our hotel where we drop our bags off and head out into the city. The first thing on our list: Lunch.

Lunch

With no set plans we decide to walk up one of the streets by our hotel and see if anything jumps out at us. We happen upon a small outdoor market with lots of interesting food options. However (total tourist here) many of the stalls felt a bit too “adventurous” so we continue on down the street. We stop at a very small hole in the wall noodle shop where lots of locals appear to have lunch. We figure it could be good so we grab seats and order, what I think, is the main thing on the menu: Noodle soup with meatballs.

Seeing as its the first bit of food we have all day we quickly devour it. I think given its only a few dollars its incredibly good value! Normally I’m able to find the place we eat at so I can link it in these blogs. However, this time around I think this shop is small enough that Google doesn’t have a record for it. So the closest I can get is this google street view of the store:

Siam Paragon

With our bellies now full, we set our sights on exploring a little around our area in Bangkok. We spend a bit of time walking around the different streets enjoying the hustle and bustle of this huge city. Eventually we find ourselves in a very fancy mall called Siam Paragon. It’s a pretty high end mall with lots of cool displays and architecture.

McDonald’s

After a few hours of walking in and around Siam Paragon, we tuck into the McDonald’s within the Siam Paragon food court to check out some of the interesting offerings McDonald’s has! The first one that jumps out at us is the fried chicken. To my knowledge North American McDonald’s do not have fried chicken, so seeing this on the menu makes it a “must order!” We weren’t disappointed either. It’s actually a solid option if you’re craving this!

The next item on the list is a savory pie. Again, I don’t believe we have anything like this in North America. Inside there is some ham, cheese and what I suspect is a creamy alfredo sauce. This is such an awesome concept and I really do hope it makes its way here! It seems like such a great idea to make these “hot pocket” type pies and would be such an easy sell for those in a rush and looking for a meal!

After McDonald’s we decide to head back to our hotel and settle a little. Cactoose wanted to call some friends back home, and it allowed Gimpy and I to do a little research for dinner!

Somtum Der

As dinner time rolls around, we decide to visit a nearby restaurant called Somtum Der. It’s a well reviewed restaurant and has a great menu! It’s also very close to our accommodations, so the walk to it is quick! Its not a huge restaurant but thankfully had seats for us. We proceed to order a variety of dishes which all taste amazing! I think the one thing I’m discovering is how tasty Thai food that’s not curry or noodles is. I’m really enjoying some of these standalone dishes!

After dinner, we walk around our neighbourhood a little more to see how we plan to tackle the day tomorrow. We intend to visit a Michelin Star street food stand and also the Grand Palace. So soon after we head back to our hotel and into bed to get ready for the day ahead!

Follow the adventure!
