Castles, Museums & Theme Parks in Denmark!

I’ve been recounting my adventures while not on the road. We had picked up a Copenhagen Card and explored the city, we would now venture outside of the city to further make use of the card.

In our quest to extract the most value out of our Copenhagen Card we took advantage of the free public transport and headed north out of the city to visit some attractions.

Frederiksborg Slot (Castle)

Our first stop was in a town called Hillerød where we would be visiting Frederiksborg Castle. With the Copenhagen Card we got to take a short ferry ride in the waters around the castle. We then disembarked and explored the beautiful Barok Gardens across from the castle. It is very well kept and a very calm and peaceful place to enjoy a nice stroll! We spent some time here before walking around to the front of the castle to go inside!

Hillerød itself was a very pretty town and we took a leisurely stroll through it before making our way back to the train station to travel further North towards Kronborg.

Kronborg Slot (Castle)

Our next stop was Kronborg Castle, or more famously known as “Elsinore” in Shakespeare’s Hamlet.  The castle is situated on one of the narrowest waterways between Sweden and Denmark and thus held a significant strategic importance. It was very different then Frederiskborg in that there was a very distinct military construction to the castle itself. We enjoyed touring the castle though sadly a lot of the furniture inside the castle had been removed, we still enjoyed the views from the castle walls.

Louisiana Museum of Modern Art & Tivoli Gardens

After leaving Kronborg Castle, we made a short stop at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art. This was more of a stop for my sister as I’m not normally one for modern art. However, they did have an interesting exhibit featuring pieces from Yoko Ono and sufficed to say she is a very “unique” person.  Sadly I had put my camera down for much of this part as it had been a long day and I was a little pooped. I did manage to snag a few shots of the great view that the Louisiana Museum has (Maybe I’m just more into the scenery then I am art?)

We returned to Copenhagen pretty late in the evening, but we still had one item on our list that we wanted to visit and that was Tivoli Gardens. Tivoli is the second oldest amusement park int he world.  Its situated on one large Copenhagen city block and seemed like an awesome way to end the evening. Both my sister and I didn’t intend to jump on any park rides, so the visit was going to be for dinner and for the experience. We entered and walked around. If you’ve been to Disney World, you’ll find similarities in that there are different areas of the gardens that are devoted to different themes. It is beautifully decorated and, as advertised does have something for everyone!

However we did find the food prices in the gardens a bit steep (like all amusement parks) and ended up venturing out of the park to pick up something quick before retiring for the night with plans for another packed day tomorrow!
