Transit to Taiwan

Perth

We start off where I left off from the previous post. After parting ways with Gimpy in Auckland, I end up in Perth where I spend the night (At the airport) before taking multiple flights to Taiwan the next day. My Singapore flight is scheduled to leave at 6:30 am and so security opened at around 3:30 am.

SilverKris Lounge (Perth)

After clearing security, my first stop is the SilverKris Lounge. I get to the lounge right when it opens and have my pick of seats as well as the food. The lounge isn’t anything to write home about, and being the morning, a lot of the unique options like drinks and ice cream didn’t appeal to me. However, they do have congee which really hit the spot in the morning!

Air New Zealand International Lounge – Perth

After a few bowls of congee (which really hit the spot btw!). I make my way to the Air New Zealand Lounge. Since there is time and I have access, why not?! I didn’t partake in any of the food (except some juice) since I already stuffed my face. But I did make use of the shower facilities which is really refreshing after a longish night in the airport. I also did enjoy the more modern feel of this lounge over the SilverKris one.

Perth to Singapore

Not too long after showering, it’s time to board. I make my way to the gate and am onboard pretty soon after that. This is one of the legs I am most keen for since its onboard a Singapore Airlines A350 in their regional business class. The seat is extremely comfortable and the food onboard is spectacular. Being a little tired from a restless night in the airport, this longer flight leg allowed me to refuel and get some much needed rest! (Even if it is a morning flight)

Singapore to Bangkok

Arriving in Singapore, I had a few hours before my next flight to Bangkok. So into the SilverKris lounge I go! Since this is the home airport for Singapore airlines, the lounge is much larger and far more well appointed than the one in Perth. There is a large buffet and food selection which included a made to order laska stand. It did not disappoint.

Soon after, it was time to go to Bangkok. This is aboard one of Singapore airlines (now retired) 777-200’s which is one of the older planes in Singapore’s fleet. So being able to try a different “flavour” of their business class is a treat! I have to say that this is probably the widest seat I’ve ever sat in, and although it is a bit dated. It is still extremely comfortable, the food and the service continues to be a stand out!

Bangkok to Taiwan

After landing in Bangkok and passing through a COVID checkpoint. The layover was only about an hour. So I hit up the EVA Air lounge to pick up a few snacks and then headed to the gate for my final flight (for today) to Taiwan.

This flight is aboard EVA’s 777-300ER which is a workhorse in their fleet. I already fell in love with the business class on their 787 plane and even though this one is a bit older, I still very much enjoyed it. I honestly have to say that EVA and Singapore may be my favorite airlines to fly now!

Our flight went pretty smoothly and without incidents. I enjoyed the food and settled in for another quick nap on the four hour flight. Before I knew it, We touched down in Taipei and I even caught a glimpse of a Hello Kitty plane!

Once on the ground, getting into Taiwan is actually quite an experience! A good one! Given the growing Covid pandemic awareness across the globe. I am actually quite impressed with Taiwan’s border and health controls upon arrival. It actually gives me a bit more sense of safety knowing that this country takes things so seriously. I had to pass through multiple security and medical check points. At one point (remember that this is before Covid testing was a thing) I had my temperature checked multiple times and even in multiple places (like having a sensor in my ear!).

After leaving the airport, I took the train into the city and made my way to the hotel. Upon checking in, I hopped into the shower and jumped straight into bed. As comfortable as it is to fly in business class, I was drained. With the overnight in Perth’s airport and the multiple legs of travel, sleep is the only thing on my mind at this point. Arriving in my final stop of Taiwan, I was ready to get a good night’s rest in anticipation of a little bit more exploring before heading home.
